Dodge County

RICE LAKE, a village in the northwest corner of Claremont Township, section 6, received its name from the neighboring lake, crossed by the west line of this county. It refers to the growth of wild rice in this shallow lake, which was used as an important food supply by the Indians. The village was thriving by 1855 and was platted in 1857. Stephen L. Wilson opened the first store in 1857 and became the first postmaster; a number of businesses developed until 1865 when the railroad chose a path several miles away, causing the village to stop growing and eventually disappear; the only remaining building is the Rice Lake Church.
