VIRGINIA, a city in Missabe Mountain Township, having a courthouse as the seat of the judicial district for the north part of the county, was founded in September 1892 and was incorporated as a city in 1894, after having been almost entirely destroyed by a fire in June 1893. It was again almost wholly burned in the summer of 1900 from a forest fire. The site of the city was originally heavily wooded. This name was proposed by David T. Adams, an explorer who was looking for mining lands; he suggested the name for the virgin country around him and for the home state of a fellow town and mine promoter, A. E. Humphreys. The post office was established in 1893; the station serving the Duluth, Missabe and Iron Range Railroad, Duluth, Winnipeg and Pacific Railway, and Great Northern Railway was in section 7.
