WARD SPRINGS, a village in section 23 of Birchdale Township, platted by J. W. and Martha J. Ward, was previously called Birch Lake City, from its location beside Little Birch Lake. The post office was called Birch Lake, 1882-1909; it became a rural branch in 1959 and was discontinued in 1965; it had a station of the Northern Pacific Railroad.
